“On a chance connection in Annapolis Maryland, I had the pleasure of a memorable boating experience. Todd Meyer had just returned from a sea trial during a particularly snotty afternoon on the Chesapeake Bay. I too, had just concluded a sea trial on a 28-foot RIB and Todd thought it would be a great opportunity to have a comparative run on his 24-footer.
I have been in the boat business since 1989. Working for many of the large boat manufactures, testing prototypes, running boats up and down the coast. I have also spent plenty of time tinkering with lots of personal boats. Currently I am a yacht broker in Maryland, and jumped at Todd’s invitation to take his prototype for a test run.
The Chesapeake Bay is known for tall, tight waves that are of little enjoyment in anything less than a 30 foot boat, or more. As Todd accelerated the 24, there was a slight sensation of lift, and then, almost
effortlessly we were cruising at 20 knots, above a 3-foot chop. Further acceleration provided additional exhilaration and stability with no pounding. To cruise comfortably – in turbulent conditions – in a 24 boat, above 20 knots -was a first-time experience for me.
The 28 foot I had just ridden had a deep-V RIB and was enjoyable for about 5 minutes. Bouncing around in the 3-4 foot chop created fatigue that necessitated a slower speed and more slaloming through the waves.
The 24 Tarpon River sea trial lasted about an hour: We could have run all day. We had fun, we watched similar sized vessels struggle while we cut through or cruised over the crests of the 3s and 4s. This boat is perfect for a long day on the water…one where the weather may change quickly. You can bank on getting home safely and comfortably.
